For parents of children with food allergies, ensuring their child remains safe at school is a daily concern. While schools strive to provide a safe environment, approaches to allergy management have historically varied between settings. Recent developments following the introduction of Benedict's Law aim to improve consistency and safety for children at risk of severe allergic reactions.

At Belfast Children's Allergy Clinic, we welcome initiatives that improve allergy awareness, staff training and emergency preparedness in schools, helping to create safer environments for children with allergies throughout Northern Ireland.

What is Benedict's Law?

Benedict's Law is a campaign inspired by the tragic death of five-year-old Benedict Blythe, who suffered a fatal allergic reaction while attending school in England in 2021. Following extensive campaigning by Benedict's family, allergy charities and healthcare professionals, the UK Government committed to strengthening allergy safety measures within schools.

The aim of Benedict's Law is to ensure that all schools have clear allergy management policies, appropriate staff training and robust emergency procedures to protect children with severe allergies.

Key Principles of Benedict's Law

Whole-School Allergy Policies

Schools should have clear written policies outlining how allergies are identified, managed and communicated throughout the school community.

Staff Training

All school staff should receive regular training to recognise the signs of allergic reactions and anaphylaxis and know how to respond quickly and effectively.

Access to Emergency Adrenaline

Schools should have access to spare adrenaline auto-injectors and ensure staff are trained in their use.

Schools should hold spare adrenaline auto-injectors and ensure staff are trained in their use.

Individual Healthcare Plans

Children with diagnosed allergies should have personalised healthcare and emergency action plans that are readily available to relevant staff members. Read more about anaphylaxis action plans for children.

Improved Communication

Effective communication between parents, healthcare professionals and schools is essential to ensure children receive appropriate support and protection.

Why is Benedict's Law Important?

Open communication between parents and school staff is central to keeping children with allergies safe.

Food allergy affects a growing number of children across the UK. Severe allergic reactions can occur unexpectedly, and rapid recognition and treatment are critical. Consistent allergy policies and staff training can significantly improve outcomes and provide reassurance to families.

Importantly, not all severe allergic reactions occur in children with a previously known allergy diagnosis, highlighting the importance of allergy awareness throughout the entire school community.

Children spend a significant proportion of their day in school. Ensuring that staff can recognise the symptoms of an allergic reaction and act promptly can make a life-saving difference.

Benedict's Law and Northern Ireland

Stormont Parliament Buildings — policymakers in Northern Ireland are considering enhanced allergy safety standards for schools.

At present, Benedict's Law applies specifically to schools in England. However, there is increasing support for adopting similar standards across Northern Ireland.

Representatives from the Benedict Blythe Foundation have met with policymakers and education leaders in Northern Ireland to discuss the introduction of enhanced allergy safety measures. The Northern Ireland Department of Education has indicated that it is monitoring developments and considering how best to strengthen existing guidance relating to allergy management in schools.

Although there is currently no legislation directly equivalent to Benedict's Law in Northern Ireland, many schools already implement excellent allergy management practices. Campaigners continue to advocate for:

  • Standardised allergy policies in all schools
  • Consistent allergy and anaphylaxis training for staff
  • Wider availability of spare adrenaline auto-injectors
  • Improved emergency response procedures
  • Better support for children living with food allergies

As awareness grows, it is hoped that the principles behind Benedict's Law will help shape future policy and improve allergy safety standards for children throughout Northern Ireland.

Supporting Children with Allergies at School

Parents can help improve allergy safety by:

  • Ensuring school staff are aware of their child's allergies
  • Providing up-to-date allergy action plans
  • Supplying prescribed adrenaline auto-injectors where required
  • Reviewing allergy management arrangements regularly with schools
  • Seeking specialist advice when needed

Working closely with healthcare professionals and schools helps ensure children with allergies can participate fully and safely in school life. For more detail on school allergy management in Northern Ireland, see our guide to managing food allergy at school in Northern Ireland.
